When demonstrating how to put on a lifejacket you can either demonstrate putting a jacket on yourself or ask to demonstrate putting a jacket on a participant.
Getting the jacket ready
Grab a lifejacket that will fit you or the participant.
Check the label of the jacket and ensure it complies. Lifejackets include details of the recommended size and weight of the wearer.
Loosen all adjustments (buckles and straps).
Donning and adjusting
Depending on the type of lifejacket, either put the jacket on like a normal unzipped jacket or pull the jacket on over the arms and head.
Do up all the buckles and zips first.
Do up the shoulder straps.
Do a final check to ensure all straps and buckles are adjusted snug.
Checking the fit of a lifejacket
Check there is no excess room around the lifejacket’s neck and armhole openings.
Place thumbs under the shoulder straps and pull up ensuring that the lifejacket does not come up above the ears.
If possible, have paddlers check the fit of each other’s lifejackets.
