Communication

Communication

For any paddling program it is important you establish a clear communication system.

.

Land communication

Communication on land is predominantly verbal and supported by demonstrations and practical involvement. This may be coordinating introductions, equipment and briefings.

Water communication

Communication on water cannot rely only on verbal due to distance, moving water, waves and wind that cause excessive background noise.  Visual cues with arms or paddles, as well as whistles can be used.

Whistle signals

One whistle blast

On the river – All clear (ok)

On the sea/flatwater – Look at me and follow paddle signals

Continuous whistle blast – Emergency
