Turning Using Reverse Sweep Strokes (Slalom)

Using reverse sweep strokes can be an effective method for precise turning. Turns can  be performed quickly and with limited pre-turn, even if an athlete is at full speed.

Coaches should encourage paddlers to follow the steps below to perform a quick turn using reverse sweep strokes.

  • Rotate shoulders and trunk of body for the paddle to be parallel with the side of the craft.
    • Keep shoulders relaxed and core engaged (pull belly button to spine) to maintain connection with the craft.
  • Fully immerse the blade at the back of the craft and build pressure on the back of the blade.
  • Use rotation and core to pull knees and the front of craft to the immersed blade.

To progress the skill, coaches should encourage the paddler to connect the reverse sweep stroke with bow draw or forward stroke

The C1 forward stroke varies significantly from paddler to paddler. As a Community Coach, it is your role to help paddlers learn the basics of the forward stroke. Once they have developed a basic understanding of the stroke, they can tailor it to suit their individual philosophy and physical and technical strengths.

An effective forward stroke is essential for C1 paddlers. They have to accelerate, maintain boat top-end speed, and maintain tracking with one blade. This requires significant control of the paddle, body and boat. Coaches should continually reinforce the foundations of the forward stroke.
